Christina Nosek is a classroom teacher, author, speaker, and passionate literacy education advocate. For the past 20 years, Christina has experienced the classroom from many sides including special education inclusion aide, lower and upper grade elementary teacher, reading specialist, literacy coach, and staff developer.
While Christina was working toward her undergraduate degree at San Diego State University, she spent her mornings as a special education inclusion aide. It was during those three years that she spent in kindergarten, first, and second grades that Christina realized teaching was her life’s work.
After a few years teaching in her own classroom, Christina decided she had to explore the world of literacy education even further. This led her to earn her masters degree in literacy instruction and reading specilaist credential at San Jose State University.
In addition to supporting elementary students in becoming lifelong readers, Christina finds true joy in helping other classroom teachers learn and grow as literacy education professionals. Recently, she has presented at regional, state, and national conferences on conferring with readers and bringing joy back to the literacy classroom. She especially loves helping her fellow classroom teachers make reading and writing instruction both practical and engaging. Christina is just thrilled to share her first book,To Know and Nurture a Reader: Conferring with Confidence and Joy, cowritten with Kari Yates, with teachers, literacy coaches, and principals to help them develop and maintain an effective conferring practice.
Christina lives in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley where she loves to cycle up mountains, run on the beach, and experiment in the kitchen when she’s not writing, speaking, or working in her fifth-grade classroom.
Conferring with students about reading allows for clearer access to one-on-one, in-the-moment teaching and learning, yet it can feel intimidating or overwhelming. Kari Yates and Christina Nosek want to help. Here they have provided practical, reflective, student-centered teaching moves that you can use to develop an intentional, joy-filled conferring practice.
To Know and Nurture a Reader: Conferring with Confidence and Joy is a get-going guide to conferring. The book includes step-by-step guidance that is also considerate of time and other classroom challenges, as well as:
Numerous tools such as guiding questions, reproducible planning and note-taking documents;
Classroom vignettes that pull you close to a reader and teacher in a conference setting;
Video clips of classroom conferences to show what conferring looks like in action.
The book breaks conferring into manageable chunks with specific goals for knowing and nurturing young readers, then puts all the pieces together with various classroom scenarios and examples. The tools, examples, and ideas in this book make conferring something every teacher can do right away and master with continued effort and practice.
