Steven R. Benson
Steve Benson is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Lesley University. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois, working under the direction of Leon McCulloh in Algebraic Number Theory. Before joining the faculty of Lesley in 2007, he was a Research Scientist at Education Development Center, Inc., where he was involved in a wide variety of projects, most of which involved the development of curricula for mathematics students and teachers. He has held mathematics faculty positions at St. Olaf College, Santa Clara University, University of New Hampshire, and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and has been co-director of the Master of Science for Teachers program at the University of New Hampshire since 1997. Steve has facilitated preservice and inservice (K-16) teacher professional development workshops across the United States, directed a research project investigating the genesis and development of mathematical talent in Mathematical Olympians, and edited the calendar problem section of theMathematics Teacherjournal published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Dr. Benson was the lead author ofWays to Think About Mathematics: Activities and Investigations for Grade 6-12 Teachers (Corwin 2004) and a contributing author toSecondary Lenses on Learning: Leadership for Mathematics Education in Middle and High Schools, (Corwin 2009).
Steve is also a semi-professional musician, playing trombone in a number of Boston-area ensembles, including Calliope, Boston’s collaborative orchestral/choral ensemble, the orchestras for a number of local opera and musical theater groups, and The Summer Street Brass.
Although he enjoys his work, he much prefers spending time with his wife, Jean, and daughter, Sophia.
